What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands by exfoliation caused by a chemical solution applied to the skin that later peels off to reveal regenerated and more even-toned skin.
What Are the Benefits?
A SkinMedica® Vitalize Peel may help to:
- Lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Even out uneven skin tone and texture
- Lessen the appearance of acne scars
- Smooth rough skin
- Make skin appear more vibrant and radiant.
What Is the Time Frame and How Many Clinical Treatments Will I Need?
You will see visible results after just one peel. The effects of the peels are cumulative. Depending on your skin condition, results are enhanced after three to six peels every three to four weeks.
What Happens During the Peel?
Your appointment will be about 45 minutes. Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and the peel solution will be applied to your skin and left to penetrate for approximately 20 minutes. A few minutes of tingling or burning sensations are normal and may be lessened with a hand-held fan. After the solution is removed, you will be provided with in-depth post-procedure skin care instructions.
What Can I Expect?
- Little to no discomfort.
- Some patients have a yellowish tinge that disappears in no more than three hours.
- Mild to moderate redness that resolves in time, after the peeling is complete.
What Happens After the Peel?
You can immediately return to work or social activities. You may apply makeup afterward. A peel uncovers new skin that is more susceptible to sunburn, so extra precautions must be taken to limit sun exposure for at least one week after the peel. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher must be used before any sun exposure to treated skin. Protective clothing may be used in addition to help shield the new vulnerable skin.
